[Review] Possets - Haywain (Constable)

image.jpeg

Collection: Summer of Elegance 2015
Status: Only available during Retour
Purchased: 6ml bottle direct from Possets

Notes: Grapefruit meets lily of the valley, skin musk, white wood vanilla (not at all cupcake vanilla), and crystal musk.

In the bottle: This is all grapefruit. It's fresh and citrusy, with a hint of something floral.

On my skin: It's oh so citrusy. The grapefruit overpowers everything at first, but after a few minutes the Lily of the Valley turns this scent into something glorious on my skin. As it dries the musk comes through and the grapefruit fades. I'm left with a musky dry down and a hint of citrus and flowers.

Throw: Moderate
Longevity: 3 hours on my skin.

Summary: A fresh, citrusy scent with a soft floral undertone and a musky dry down.

Verdict: I like this scent, but it's not something I'll reach for immediately. Those few minutes when wet and the Lily of the Valley comes through are gorgeous, but sadly it just doesn't last long enough.

Collection: Summer of Elegance 2015 / Permanent Blends
Status: This was added to the Permanent Blends section on 15th October and is no available
Purchased: 6ml bottle direct from Possets

Notes: This is an aquatic with a heavy component of coconut which truly adds a lot of character to the marine aspect (by having an unanticipated similarity to the watery base). On top of it all, I floated a serious amount of cannabis scent and the result was positively electric. I love this fragrance and it is a very very complex thing brought out of very few materials. I think there is a happy change in the scent where the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. Aquatic, zesty, fruity, and very soothing for a hot day.

In the bottle: This smells super fresh and aquatic and exotic. I'm not completely familiar with marine notes so I'm unsure of what I'm sniffing here, but it's very unisex with something tropical peeking through.

On my skin: This doesn't change a great deal until a few minutes in. That's when the coconut truly shows up and this scent becomes intoxicatingly exotic. Oh my... this is gorgeous! I instantly think of Summer storms. You know where there's that unbearable heat before the first rumble of thunder, and all your windows are wide open as the heaven's open and the rain bounces of everything? Yeah, that. Each time I've worn this I've been convinced I can sniff pineapple in it. It really is a sublime fresh, tropical scent for the summer, with that watery base holding it back from becoming too sweet and cloying. My partner adores this scent on me, too, so added points for that!

Throw: High
Longevity: 9+ hours every time!

Summary: A fresh, tropical, unisex scent. Perfect for those humid days when a storm is brewing.

Verdict: I'm incredibly happy I plumped for a full bottle of this one! I adore it and so does my partner.

Collection: Summer of Elegance 2015
Status: Only available during Retour
Purchased: 6ml bottle direct from Possets

Notes: This is a deep summer peach scent which opens with the awakening properties of the peach pit (it tastes like bitter almond and smells that way because it is full of cyanide so don't eat one). Then the succulent, sweet summery smell of peach comes blooming out of the blend. There are actually three sorts of peach scents in here, and a couple of secret pushing fragrances which will bring the whole into a divine peach feel, as well as a skin musk. I think you will like this one very much. Foody and fruity and luscious

In the bottle: It's tart! I get all the peach, with a little sugar.

On my skin: It's still all peach but it's a bit... cloying. There's something in this that reminds me of furniture polish at first. High end furniture polish though. Like when you walk into the lobby of a rather expensive hotel. As it dries the peach becomes softer and I think there's perhaps vanilla coming through? It's a velvety peach scent now, all buttery and yummy. There's a delicious baking scent floating around me, but if I put my wrist to my nose I still get that furniture polish. It's odd. Twenty minutes in and the polish smell disappears completely and all I'm left with is the scent of baked goodness. I've never tasted peach pie (I don't even know if such a thing exists), but I swear I have one baking in the oven.

Throw: High
Longevity: 5-6 hours on my skin.

Summary: All the peach! Something weirdly resembling furniture polish to begin with, but oooh... that dry down. Baked peach amazeballs!

Verdict: Heh, I know this is a scent from the Summer of Elegance collection, but I can totally see this becoming my Holy Grail scent for Autumn (or Fall if you're not from the UK)! I'm especially looking forward to wearing this in an evening once the clocks go back and I've had to walk home from work in the dark. Another full bottle I absolutely don't regret buying.

Collection: Summer of Elegance 2015

Purchased: 6ml bottle direct from Possets

Notes: Marine vanilla (yes, I actually constructed this and it's beautiful), with an oakwood accord, silk accord, and two golden ambers. Dry and sophisticated and somehow resinous despite its aquatic parent. Highly unusual and very attractive.

In the bottle: This is a clean, watery, aquatic scent. It's very unisex, bordering on masculine.

On my skin: It stays fairly linear to first sniff. The amber sneaks in after a while, but mostly this remains watery and masculine on my skin.

Throw: Moderate
Longevity: 5 hours on my skin

Summary: A clean, masculine scent with a hint of amber.

Verdict: Probably my least favourite of the five Summer of Elegance bottles I purchased. That said, I'm going to try this one out on my partner as he's all for testing my more masculine scents.

[Review] Possets - Gelato: Vaniglia

61824_900.jpg

Collection: Permanent Blend
Status: Available
Purchased: 1ml sample vial direct from Possets
Notes: It is possible to have vanilla as a top, middle, and bottom note. I just did it. It is just a halo of vanilla as I have tasted it among the best of gelatos. Mmmmm. Vanilla was never so concentrated and so pure.

In the vial: I get a gorgeous dose of boozy vanilla. It's creamy and yummy and just... bliss!

On my skin: This stays the same to begin with. As it dries though the booziness fades and there's the delicious smell of cake coming through. It's gorgeous! After a while I get random wafts of cinnamon, too. I really like this one.

Throw: OK. It's low compared to other Possets scents I've tried, but strong enough for me to smell like scrumptious vanilla gelato to anyone stood close to me.
Longevity: Around 4 hours on my skin.

Summary: Boozy vanilla with a soft cinnamon cake dry down.

Verdict: I like this one a lot and will probably purchase a full bottle next time I order from Possets. The cinnamon is very faint rather than in your face and creates a spicy twist to the vanilla.

Collection: Permanent Blend
Status: Available
Purchased: 1ml sample vial direct from Possets

Notes: That gingerbread house from your childhood? Well the neighborhood has changed and now it sports a red light out front! Very foody, very sweet, very sexy, very grown up in a sex kitten way. This is European Gingerbread given an American Cajun jolt with the spices, cher! Mmmm. Unisex, sexy-sex, and wow. Oh, the sign outside does say,"Ho Ho Ho House". Heh. You might end up with a whole new reputation. Sweet, foody, gourmand, spicy.

In the vial: Oh my! This is the most delicious gingerbread ever. Buttery, velvety, creamy. It's gorgeous.

On my skin: It becomes a tiny bit spicy. I get nutmeg and cinnamon from this, but the delicious gingerbread is still dominant. As it dries it becomes a lot creamier, but I get the occasional waft of spice.

Throw: High
Longevity: 8+ hours

Summary: Just as the notes described - this is definitely a sexy, grown-up version of gingerbread. Creamy and sweet, with a little kick from the spices. Gorgeous!

Verdict: Another one I will probably pick up a full size of. I can't wait to wear this leading up to Christmas!

Collection: Summer Craves [2015]
Status: Unavailable
Purchased: 1ml decant from a Sunday Swap on IMAM

Notes: Rain, woodland strawberries, fresh water, petitgrain, osmanthus, clover, and smooth amber.

In the vial: This is fresh and clean. It's rain water with a hint of something floral. I detect no strawberries whatsoever, but I love what I'm smelling all the same.

On my skin: the watery floral scent remains for a couple of minutes, and then it turns slightly fruity. I get a little bit of strawberry, but for the most part there's a diluted freshness wafting around me. Around the ten minute mark this turns incredibly sweet on my skin and the strawberry becomes a whole lot stronger. This is all sugar but without being too sugary. How is that even possible? I get frequent wafts of jelly beans (not an artificial jelly bean... but like sticking your nose straight into a Jelly Belly jar), for about two hours, but every time I put my wrist to my nose, I get freshly picked strawberries. It's incrediblee.

Throw: Moderate
Longevity: 5 hours on my skin.

Summary: Fresh and watery to begin with, drying down to sweet, sugary strawberries.

Verdict: I really like this one and would definitely purchase a full bottle if I could. I love what I sniff in the vial, but that dry down is exquisite.

Collection: Summer Craves [2015]
Status: Unavailable
Purchased: 1ml decant from a Sunday Swap on IMAM

Notes: Burning frankincense and myrrh, rich red musk, and fraises des bois.

In the vial: I get green strawberries with a hint of something woody. I catch a slight whiff of incense every now and then, but mostly it's just woodland strawberries.

On my skin: This becomes quite musky and the wood note becomes a lot stronger. The strawberries fade considerably but I can definitely still detect them. As it dries I get a lot of incense and smoke, before this becomes all woodland strawberries again with a hint of musk. My partner hugged me around the hour mark and declared, "you smell like one of your incense sticks, mmmm!" The longer I wear this the sweeter the strawberries become and the combination of them and the red musk are a match made in heaven. I adore this scent!

Throw: Pretty high throughout. (It wafts around me to begin with, and then I get frequent whiffs when I move my arms.)
Longevity: 6 hours on my skin.

Summary: Woodland strawberries with a lot of musky incense.

Verdict: Easily one of my all time favourite scents. I wear this a lot at bedtime. It's the perfect scent for snuggling up at night while I let my brain switch off and think only about sleep :) I would without doubt buy a full size bottle of this if I could.
